Why Shravan is Called Lord Shiva’s Month

It is believed that during this month Lord Shiva consumed the poison “Haalahala” to save the world during the Samudra Manthana. In the process of churning the Ksheera Sagara or Milk Ocean to get the “Amruth” for immortality, Vasuki the Shesha Naga which is used as rope for churning; started emitting Haalahala of the poison.

Lord Shiva acted immediately acted and consumed it. But Maa Parvati held Lord Shiva’s neck so that poison should not go down in his body. So, the poison stayed in the neck of Lord Shiva turning his neck blue. Thus, Lord Shiva is called “Neelkanth”. In order to reduce the effect of poison Devas bathed Shiva with milk. This ritual continued and devotees bath Shivalinga with milk and water during this month.
