Narali Bhat Recipe or Maharashtrian sweetened coconut rice recipe is a special recipe made with coconut and jaggery. This recipe is very popular in Maharashtra and prepared during Narali Poornima or the full moon day.

Narali Bhat Recipe is a simple recipe made with minimal ingredients. It is very easy to prepare also. As Narali Poornima falls in the sacred month of Shravan.

I was born and brought up in Northern Karnataka before I moved to Maharashtra. Therefore, Maharashtrian recipes are very common in my family.  Narali Bhat recipe is one such recipe which was a frequently made sweet rice during festivals.

Ingredients:

Narali Bhat Recipe

For Coconut Jaggery Mixture:

  • Ghee / clarified butter: 1 tbsp
  • 10 cashew / kaju
  • 2 tbsp raisins / kishmish
  • 1 cup jaggery/gur
  • 1 cup coconut, grated

For the Rice:

  • Ghee / clarified butter: 2 tbsp
  • Cardamom / elaichi: 3 pods
  • Cloves / lavang: 4-5
  • Rice: One bowl
  • Salt: ¼ tsp
  • Cardamom powder: ¼ tsp

Instructions For Cooking:

Cooking the Rice:

  1. Narali Bhat Recipe is usually cooked in a pot. But I made it in a Pressure Cooker.
  2. In the cooker heat 2 tbsp ghee and add cloves, raisins, cashews and badam. Saute for one minute.
  3. Now add 1 cup rice (Washed) and saute for a minute. Then add 2 cups of water and ¼ tsp salt.
  4. Mix well cover with lid and cook for 2 whistles.

Coconut Jaggery Mixture

  1. In a pan or Kadai heat 1 tbsp ghee and roast cloves, raisins, cashews and Badam.
  2. Then add 1 cup jaggery and 1 cup grated coconut. Mix it on low flame until jaggery melts and combines well.
  3. Once jaggery is mixed with coconut properly transfer the mixture into cooked rice and mix gently.
  4. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes so the rice and jaggery mixture combine well and absorb the flavors.
  5. Add ¼ tsp cardamom powder and serve Narali Bhat.

Narali Bhat is a sweet rice recipe made with Rice, Coconut and Jaggery. Usually, it is prepared on Narali Poornima or Rakhi Poornima in Maharashtra

Ingredients

  • For the Coconut Jaggery Mixture

  • Narali Bhat recipe can be prepared with almost any type of rice variant. The only thing to be noted is it has to be non-sticky and easily separable.
  • For better texture, it is better to make with basmati rice.
  • Narali Bhat is best made with Jaggery only. Yet you can experiment by using sugar instead of jaggery. Colour and taste will be changed accordingly.

Why is Narali Poornima Festival celebrated?

Narali Poornima festival is celebrated to mark the end of the monsoon season, as the fishermen now can begin fishing safely and start off with their trade.
The festival is primarily observed by the fishing and coastal communities to offer prayers and seek blessings for a safe and prosperous fishing season. u0022Naraliu0022 refers to coconut in Marathi, and on this day, coconuts are offered to the sea as a symbolic gesture of appeasing Varuna, the God of the Sea.
People also prepare their traditional food which includes coconut-like Narali Bhaat or coconut rice. Narali Pournima, Shravani Pournima, Rakhi Pournima and Raksha Bandhan are the various names given to this festival. Naral means coconut and coconut is offered to the sea, so it is called the Narali Poornima.

What is Rakhi Poornima?

Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Poornima is an age-old festival in India and it was prevalent even during the Indus civilization. The story of Rani Karnawati who sent Emperor Humayun a Rakhi to seek protection of Chittor against Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat is one of the most famous stories of Raksha Bandhan. Even Draupadi had tied a Rakhi around the wrist of Lord Krishna who protected her always.

In summary, Narali Poornima is a coastal festival celebrated with enthusiasm and devotion by the fishing communities in Maharashtra, where offerings are made to the sea to seek blessings for a successful fishing season and protection from the sea’s uncertainties.
