Hello Friends Manjiri’s Foods welcomes you all.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a most awaited and celebrated festival in India and Indians across the world. Lord Ganesha is most worshipped deity. Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, or Vinayaka Chaviti is celebrated to mark the arrival of Lord Ganesh to earth from Kailash along with his mother Goddess Parvati/Gauri.

The fourth day of Bhadrapada month is Ganesh Chaturthi. The day begins with the installation of Lord Ganesh’s clay murtis in homes and publicly on pandals (temporary stages). The festival is celebrated for one day, one and half day, five days and ten days according to one’s custom. Mostly it is celebrated for five day or ten days.

Then the clay murtis will be immersed in river, sea, wells and canals. Nowadays Government provides temporary ponds or mobile tanks to protect the environment. Or people immerse the idols in big containers at their home only. Thereafter the clay idol dissolves and Ganesh is believed to return to Mount Kailash to Parvati and Shiva

Though Modaks are said to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet, various other recipes are prepared to please him. The list of sweets and dishes varies from region to region and household.

First day of the Ganesh Chaturthi Steamed Modaks (I have already posted the recipe for steamed modak) are prepared. Or fried modaks are made. And different sweets and dishes are made throughout the festival.

Shingole Three Types is very unique sweet recipe. Shingole are made on the last day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Usually when we travel, we take snacks along to eat enroute. It is believed that Ganesh visarjan is the beginning of Lord Ganesha’s Journey towards Kailas. So, Shingole are sent along with him as snacks to eat on the way home.

Any offering of food to the Lord is considered as Prasad – a holy gift from the Lord. What we offer to God is Naivedyam. When it is received back it becomes Prasad. Prasad is a gracious gift. When food becomes prasad it has deity’s blessing within it. The real meaning of prasada is “purity, cheerfulness, bliss, joy, peace.”
