Pankaj Udhas passed away on Monday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after battling a prolonged illness. He was 72.

He played a major role in bringing ghazals to the mainstream, making them accessible to a wider audience beyond connoisseurs of the genre.

He was honoured with prestigious awards including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award for Ghazal Singing, and the Padma Shri.
