He also said, Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day. Then on it is celebrated across the globe since 2015.
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India. Lord Shiva is considered to be the originator of yoga, he is the Adiyogi.
The Saptarishis introduced Yoga to the people. The Vedas explain how Shiva's second teaching as a Adiyogi was devoted to the Saptarishis.
The first International Day of Yoga was observed around the world on 21 June 2015. The Ministry of AYUSH made the necessary arrangements in India.
That day around 35,985 people, including PM Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes at Rajpath in New Delhi.
This was the largest yoga class ever held, and 84 Nations have participated. Similar days have been held in cities in India and around the world each year since then.
This day is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere (shortest in the southern hemisphere), having special significance in many parts of the world.
From the perspective of yoga, Sun’s transition to Dakshinayana starts today. And the coming Poornima or full moon is Gurupoornima.
Lord Shiva, the first yogi (Adi Yogi), is said to have begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind on Gurupoornima thus, becoming the Adi Guru.
Yoga is not about exercise but to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature.
This year’s theme for International Yoga Day is Humanity’ and it focuses on how yoga helps achieve holistic health of every individual.
People across the globe have embraced Yoga to stay healthy and rejuvenated and to fight the social isolation and depression that was widespread during the pandemic.
